Overview

Purpose of the Post

 

To provide evidence based, high quality speech & language therapy service to acute inpatient areas and patients in residential long stay units as required. This may include patients in the emergency department and the acute medical assessment unit.

 

 

Organisational Context

 

The HSE has created six new health regions. Each region is responsible for providing both hospital and community care for the people in that area. Bringing community health services and hospitals together means we can take a more patient-centred approach to healthcare.

 

HSE Dublin and North East provides health and social care to North Dublin, Louth, Meath,

Monaghan and most areas of Cavan.

 

HSE Dublin and North East Region includes the following hospitals;

  • Beaumont Hospital
  • Cavan General Hospital
  • Connolly Hospital
  • Louth County Hospital
  • National Orthopaedic Hospital Cappagh
  • Monaghan General Hospital
  • Mater Misericordiae University Hospital
  • Our Ladys Hospital Navan
  • Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital
  • Rotunda Hospital

 

The hospital is affiliated to the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), Dublin City University (DCU), University College Dublin (UCD), Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and the Institute of Technology for teaching a variety of undergraduate students.

 

The speech & language therapy department provides a service to all patients presenting with communication and feeding, eating, drinking & swallowing (FEDS) difficulties in the acute setting. A videofluoroscopy service is also provided.

Essential Criteria

Each candidate must on closing date for applications possess:

Statutory Registration, Professional Qualifications

  • Be registered, or be eligible for registration, as a Speech & Language Therapist by the Speech & Language Therapists Registration Board at CORU.

                                                                                AND

  • Candidates must have the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability and professional ability) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office.

                                                                                AND

  • Provide proof of Statutory Registration on the Speech & Language Therapist Register maintained by the Speech & Language Therapists Registration

 

(i) On appointment, practitioners must maintain annual registration on the Speech and Language Therapists Register maintained by the Speech and Language Therapy Registration Board at CORU

 

                                                                                          AND

 

(ii) Practitioners must confirm annual registration with CORU to the HSE by way of the annual Patient Safety Assurance Certificate (PSAC).

 

Post Specific Requirements-

  • Speech and Language Therapists who work with people with feeding, eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties must hold a dysphagia qualification or equivalent as outlined in “Standards of Practice for Speech and Language Therapists on the Management of Feeding, Eating, Drinking and Swallowing Disorders (Dysphagia)” Irish Association of Speech and Language Therapists (IASLT) 2007.
  • Demonstrate depth & breadth of speech and Language therapy experience as relevant to the role in an acute hospital setting.
