Overview

The Senior Physiotherapist in Pelvic Health will be a lead clinician in the area of pelvic health and continence and will be responsible for provision of a high quality physiotherapy service to inpatients (maternity and gynaecology) and outpatients in Cavan Monaghan Hospital.

 

The post is based in Cavan General Hospital. There may be a requirement to provide sessions to Monaghan Hospital as service need arises. As the service develops there may be a requirement to provide outreach clinics at Primary Care centres across the local area. The post holder will work closely with physiotherapy colleagues in Cavan Monaghan Hospital and in Cavan Monaghan Primary Care services to improve standards of practice in the clinical area. The post holder will work closely with Consultant Obstetricians, Clinical Specialist Physiotherapists, Urologists, Midwives and continence CNS’s to deliver a multi-disciplinary approach to patients under their care. The post holder will provide clinical support and supervision to a staff grade physiotherapist and/or undergraduate physiotherapy students

There are currently one whole- time permanent position available in Cavan and Monaghan Hospital.

 

A panel may be created from this campaign for Cavan & Monaghan Hospital from which current and future permanent and specified purpose vacancies of full time or part time duration may be filled.

Cavan & Monaghan Hospital’s Catchment Population of over 120,000 covering Counties Cavan & Monaghan, and parts of Counties Longford, Leitrim, and Meath. Cavan Monaghan Hospital is part of the RCSI Hospitals Group which covers a population in excess of 800,000.

 

Cavan & Monaghan Hospital provides a range of acute medical, surgical, obstetric, and gynaecological, paediatric services, day care, outpatient, diagnostic and support services.  Emergency services are provided on a 365-day, 24 hour basis.  Multi-disciplinary teams representative of medical, nursing/midwifery, health and social care professionals, management administration and general support staff play a pivotal role in the development, delivery, monitoring and evaluation of these services.  Cavan General Hospital has a total in-patient bed complement of 255 and 102 day beds.  Monaghan Hospital has a total of 54 in-patient beds inclusive of step-down and rehabilitation and 17 day beds. The total staff HSE complement is approximately 1279 in Cavan General Hospital and 159 in Monaghan Hospital.  The hospital is affiliated to the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) for medical education, to Dundalk Institute of Technology for nursing education and to University College Dublin (UCD), Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and the Institute of Technology for health and social care professional education.

Clinical Practice

 

The Senior Physiotherapist (Pelvic Health) will:

  • Be a lead clinician in the physiotherapy profession and carry a clinical caseload appropriate to the post
  • Be responsible for client assessment, development and implementation of individualised treatment plans that are client centred and in line with best practice.
  •  Be responsible for goal setting in partnership with client, family and other team members as appropriate
  •  Be responsible for standards of practice of self and staff appointed to clinical / designated area(s)
  •  Be a clinical resource for other physiotherapists
  •  Communicate and work in co-operation with the Physiotherapy Manager and other team members in providing an integrated quality service, taking the lead role as required.
  •  Communicate effectively with and provide instruction, guidance and support to, staff clients, family, carers etc 
  •  Document client records in accordance with professional standards and departmental policies
  •  Provide a service in varied locations in line with local policy / guidelines and within appropriate time allocation (e.g. clinic, home visits).
  • Participate and be a lead clinician as appropriate in review meetings, case conferences etc.
  • Develop and promote professional standards of practice
  •  Work within own scope of professional competence in line with principles of best practice, professional conduct and clinical governance
  •  Seek advice of relevant personnel when appropriate / as required
  •  Demonstrate evidence based practice through the process of clinical reasoning and decision making, allowing knowledge to be applied to complex/different situations
  • Keep abreast of research and practice developments in relevant clinical areas by attending seminars, conferences and post graduate courses
  • Keep accurate written and/or electronic records on the assessment, treatment, outcome and other information relevant to patients.
  • Record, collate and submit statistics including key performance indicators for the programme within agreed timeframes.
  • Participate in relevant service and professional meetings.
  • Ensure the privacy and dignity of the patient is respected at all times
  • Participate in the weekend and on-call physiotherapy service in line with departmental policy.
  • Operate within the scope of practice of the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists
  •  Undertake other duties within the hospital as specified by the Physiotherapy Manager 3 or designate.

 

Quality, Safety and Risk Management

 

The Senior Physiotherapist (Pelvic Health) will:

 

  • Comply with the delivery of standards in the assessment, treatment and management of patients within his/her assigned area in line with international best practice guidelines.
  • Contribute to the development of and comply with policy and procedure in the relevant clinical areas.
  • Lead, promote and ensure clinical effectiveness of physiotherapy treatment through performance management, education, audit and research.
  • Advise and support changes in work practices and procedures in the light of best practice developments in the clinical area.
  • Be familiar with and uphold the policies and principles of the Safety Statement, HSE Risk Management and professional guidelines.
  • Identify, assess and report any risk and contribute to the management and review of all risks.
  • Participate as required in Occupational Health and Safety training and other mandatory training as identified by the Physiotherapy Manager.
  • Document all accidents, incidents and potential hazards to patients or staff immediately and report them to the Physiotherapy Manager and Consultants
  • Have a working knowledge of the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) Standards as they apply to the role for example, Standards for Healthcare, National Standards for the Prevention and Control of Healthcare Associated Infections
  • Hygiene Standards etc and comply with associated HSE protocols for implementing and maintaining these standards as appropriate to the role.
  • Support, promote and actively participate in sustainable energy, water and waste initiatives to create a more sustainable, low carbon and efficient health service.

 

Working Practice

 

The Senior Physiotherapist (Pelvic Health) will:

  •  Work alongside other members of the Pelvic Health Physiotherapy team.
  • Attend and contribute to multi-disciplinary meetings.
  • Provide clinical supervision and training to Staff Physiotherapists in the area of pelvic health.
  • Lead and develop strong links with Consultants Obstetricians/Urologists and negotiate evidence based changes in clinical practice to deliver improved clinical pathways.
  • Ensure timely communication and collaboration with the Multi-disciplinary Team, and Physiotherapy Manager.
  • Build and maintain good relationships with relevant stakeholders.
  • Work collaboratively within the designated region with other physiotherapists within the clinical specialty.
  • Serve on and advise such committees as appropriate.
  • Compile and prepare reports as requested.

Education

 

The Senior Physiotherapist (Pelvic Health) will:

 

  • Initiate and participate in own continuous professional development and performance management with the Physiotherapy Manager
  • Put in place evaluating mechanisms appropriate to the specialist area and continually audit and evaluate the service with a view to maximizing effectiveness, efficiency and quality.
  • Contribute to the continuing professional development activities programmes of the physiotherapy service
  • Attend relevant post graduate courses and lectures.
  • Co-operate in the provision of safe and productive clinical placements in accordance with the departments commitment to clinical training programmes.
  • Serve as a resource to other staff in this area of clinical speciality at regional level.

 

Essential Criteria

1.Statutory Registration, Professional Qualifications, Experience, etc  

(a) Eligible applicants will be those who on the closing date of the competition have the following:

 

(i) Be registered, or eligible for registration, on the Physiotherapist Register maintained by the Physiotherapist Registration Board at Coru.

(ii) Have three years full time (or an aggregate of three years full time) post qualification clinical experience.

 

                                                                                    And

 

(iii) Have the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability and professional ability) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office.

(iv) Provide proof of Statutory Registration on the Physiotherapists Register maintained by the Physiotherapists Registration Board at CORU before a contract of employment can be issued

 

2. Annual registration

 

(i) On appointment practitioners must maintain annual registration on Physiotherapists Register maintained by the Physiotherapists Registration Board at CORU

                                                                                      And

(ii) Practitioners must confirm annual registration with CORU to the HSE by way of the annual Patient Safety Assurance Certificate (PSAC).

 

3.Health

A candidate for and any person holding the office must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the office and be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.

 

4.Character

Each candidate for and any person holding the office must be of good character.

 

Note*

Individuals who qualified before 30th September 2018 and are registered or have applied for registration under Section 91 of the health and Social Care Professionals Act, 2005, must  hold a physiotherapy qualification approved by CORU in order to be eligible to apply. Section 91 candidates are Individuals who qualified before 30th September 2018 and have been engaged in the practice of profession in the Republic of Ireland for a minimum of 2 years fulltime ( or an aggregate of 2 years fulltime), between 1st October 2016 and 30th September 2018 are considered to be Section 91 applicants under the Health and Social Care professionals Act, 2005.
