Overview

To support the Area Director of Nursing in their overall management responsibilities and professional standards for the Mental Health Services.

 

Be responsible for assisting the Area Director of Nursing and Director of Nursing by taking an active role in the professional leadership, development and management of the nursing and health care staff in the service.

 

To lead and support the continued development of the Mental Health Services and to participate in meeting HSE policy objectives for Mental Health Services.

The Director of Nursing, Assistant (Mental Health) will operate in accordance with the policies of the HSE, and in work collaboration with other professionals and service managers to achieve service goals in the area of Mental Health.

 

The Director of Nursing, Assistant (Mental Health) will be required to work in collaboration with members of the multidisciplinary team to implement the strategic objectives for the Mental Health Services.

 

In the Louth Meath Mental Health Service, the Assistant Director of Nursing, will assume governance responsibilities for delegated areas within the services on a rotational basis. These areas of responsibility will include Approved Centres, a range of community services and teams, community residences and continuing care in Adult Mental Health and other development al services in line with Model of Care/National Clinical Programmes.

 

The Director of Nursing, Assistant (Mental Health) will be responsible to the Area Director of Nursing for the delivery of an efficient mental health nursing service.  They will be responsible for ensuring professional nursing standards are maintained in line with Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) standards. S/he will be concerned with the execution of policy decisions and with the management and effective utilisation of resources. The role will not be limited by reference to this profile and should reflect established practices in relation to the Director of Nursing, Assistant (Mental Health). It is expected, in the normal course of events, that the role will evolve as professional, and service demands change.  In particular, the profile may need to be adapted at local level to meet specific requirements in relation to the management of specific functional and clinical area responsibilities.

Essential Criteria

1.Professional Qualifications, Experience, etc.

  • Eligible applicants will be those who on the closing date for the competition:

 

(i)

Are registered, or are eligible for registration, in the Psychiatric Nursing Division of the Register of Nurses and Midwives maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland [NMBI] (Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann).

 

And

(ii)

Have 7 years post registration psychiatric nursing experience and 5 years psychiatric nursing management experience.

 

 

And

(iii)

Have successfully completed a post registration programme of study, as certified by the education provider, which verifies that the applicant has achieved a National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) major academic Level 8 or higher award maintained by Quality & Qualifications of Ireland (QQI) or can provide written evidence from the Higher Education Institute that they have achieved the number of ECTS credits equivalent to a Level 8 or higher standard in a health care or management related area.

 

 

And

  • Candidates must possess the requisite clinical, leadership, managerial and administrative knowledge and ability for the proper discharge of the duties of the office.

 

2.Annual registration

 

(i)

On appointment practitioners must maintain live annual registration on the Psychiatric Nurse Division of the Register of Nurses & Midwives maintained by Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland [NMBI] (Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann).

 

 

And

(ii)

Practitioners must confirm annual registration with NMBI to the HSE by way of the annual Patient Safety Assurance Certificate (PSAC).

 

3.Health

Candidate for and any person holding the office must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the office and be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.

 

4.Character

Each candidate for and any person holding the office must be of good character.

 

Please note that appointment to and continuation in posts that require statutory registration is dependent upon the post holder maintaining annual registration in the relevant division of the register maintained by Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann (Nursing Midwifery Board Ireland)
