The job of a Grade III Clerical Officer can be extremely broad and varies greatly. 


  • General administrative support to MDT
  • Minute Taking
  • Chart pulling as required
  • Medical Typing
  • Dealing with general queries
  • Covering of other specialities when the need arises
  • Organisational and time management skills


Other duties as may be assigned to the officer from time to time by their Relevant Line Manager/Supervisor.


This campaign will run in compliance with the Code of Practice prepared by the Commission for Public Service Appointments (CPSA).

The CPSA is responsible for establishing the principles that should be followed when making an appointment. These are set out in the CPSA Code of Practice. Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown is a major teaching hospital providing a range of acute medical and surgical services, day care, outpatient, diagnostic and support services.  Emergency services are provided on a 365-day, 24 hour basis.  Multi-disciplinary teams representative of medical, nursing, allied health professionals, management and general support staff play a pivotal role in the development, delivery, monitoring and evaluation of these services.  The hospital has a current bed complement of >300 beds.


The hospital is affiliated to the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) for medical education, to Dublin City University (DCU) for nursing education and to University College Dublin (UCD), Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and the Institute of Technology for allied health professional education.


Connolly Hospital is one of 8 hospitals in the RCSI Hospitals Group covering a population of over 800,000 people.  Connolly Hospital’s Catchment Population of over 331,000 covers Dublin West, North Kildare and South Meath.

Key Responsibilities

Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide administrative support to the service
  • Healthcare Records Management (HCR)
  • Ensure targets are achieved and deadlines met.
  • Ensure work is carried out to highest standard.
  • Responsible for the Health and Safety of yourself and others.
  • Ongoing personal development and training



  • Filing of reports/correspondence 
  • General office duties
  • Minute Taking
  • Liaising with Medical, Nursing and other members of the MDT teams as required
  • Liaising with external stakeholders as appropriate to the service
  • Carry out any other duties that may be assigned by the Line Manager.

Information Technology

  • Participate in ICT projects in relation to the department


Health & Safety

  • Ensure that effective safety procedures are in place to comply with the Health, Safety & Welfare at Work Act



You will be aware of the confidential nature of hospital work and in particular the patient’s right to confidentiality. To this end you will not discuss workings of the Hospital or it’s patients with people outside the hospital, except as required to do so in the course of your work. You must return to the hospital upon request and in any event, upon the termination of your employment, all documents or other property of the hospital which are in your possession or under your control. No documents or property of the hospital may be removed from the hospital without prior authorisation.


The post may involve acting in a higher capacity if required.

  1. Professional Qualifications, Experience, etc

(a) Eligible applicants will be those who on the closing date for the competition:


  • Obtained at least grade D (or pass) in Higher or Ordinary Level in five subjects from the approved list of subjects in the Department of Education established Leaving Certificate Examination or Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme or Leaving Certificate Applied..




  • Passed an examination of at least equivalent standard




  • Satisfactory relevant experience which encompasses demonstrable equivalent skills




(b) Candidates must possess the requisite knowledge and ability, including a high standard of suitability and administrative ability), for the proper discharge of the office.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft office, excel experience would be desirable
