Overview

As a member of the front line nursing team, the staff nurse will deliver patient centred clinical care with respect and compassion. Provide clinical nursing leadership and ensure the provision of high quality care, consistent with the mission, vision, values and strategic plan of the hospital. Displaying excellent clinical, interpersonal and communication skills, the staff nurse will have a progressive attitude to the continual improvement of patient care through research and evidence based practice.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Practice

  • Develop and maintain the clinical skills and knowledge necessary to provide clinically effective, holistic, evidence based nursing care. This includes expanded role responsibilities, within the Scope of Professional Practice, following appropriate training.
  • Take direction from the senior nursing management team on all clinical matters
  • Promote the health, safety, welfare and social wellbeing of patients within our services
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate individual person centred care programmes within an agreed framework.
  • Communicate complex and sensitive information effectively to patients, families, carers and other staff, overcoming any barriers to understanding and providing support during distressing or emotional events.
  • Develop and promote good interpersonal relationships working with all key stakeholders, reporting to senior nurse management on clinical issues as appropriate. Participate in innovation and change in the approach to patient care delivery particularly in relation to new research findings, evidence based practice and advances in treatment.
  • To be competent in the administration of medication and adhere to Hospital Medication Policy at all times.
  • Participate in community needs assessment and ongoing community delivery of care
  • Promote a positive health concept with patients and colleagues and contribute to health promotion and disease prevention initiatives of the Health Service Executive.
  • Demonstrate flexibility by rotating / assisting in other units / care settings as required to meet nursing resource needs and the requirements of the integrated services programme (ISP).
  • Ensure implementation of infection prevention and control guidelines
  • Strong knowledge of HIQA Standards as they apply to the role and setting, for example, Standards for Healthcare, National Standards for the Prevention and Control of Healthcare Associated Infections, Hygiene Standards etc.
  • Evaluate information, problem solve and make appropriate decisions based on evidence
  • Engage in skilled, compassionate, individualised and timely communication with patients, families, carers and members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Deliver information in a clear and concise manner to staff, committees and all key stakeholders

Risk Management, Quality, Patient Safety and Governance

  • Ensure high standards for clinical governance and quality & safety
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the multi-disciplinary systems of audit and risk management.
  • Contribute to the measurement of quality of outcomes, effective use of resources such as Key Performance Indicators / Nursing Metrics.
  • Be accountable for risk assessments of clinical areas and assist in the development of a quality improvement plans to address deficits.
  • Conduct on-going and regular audit at the request of the Director of Nursing and subsequent action planning for all areas within the nursing remit.
  • Assist in the development and review of policies and standards for the safe use of equipment and any new equipment introduced to the department.
  • Accurately record and report all complaints to the appropriate personnel

People Management

  • Ensure the provision of appropriate supervision and support to Post Graduate and Under Graduate Student Nurse.
  • Be a team leader for a group of nurses, acting as a mentor/preceptor and facilitating their development through challenge and support.
  • Commitment to own continued professional development and promote a culture of learning. Ensure compliance with all mandatory training.
  • Undertake the key worker role and assign it as appropriate
  • Manage allocated resources effectively and efficiently. This includes maintaining the correct skill mix of staff for patient dependency, bed/list management, utilisation of time and equipment.
  • Ensure knowledge of hospital policies, procedures and guidelines
  • Engage in localised performance management strategies and professional development planning.
  • Comply with HR system and policy requirements including the recording of relevant data
  • Participate / establish communication mechanism for the nursing team including schedule of staff meetings.

Essential Criteria

Statutory Registration, Professional Qualifications, Experience etc.

 

Eligible candidates will be those who on the closing date for the competition

  • Be registered in the General Division of the Register of Nurses maintained by An Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland) or be entitled to be so registered.

AND

  • Have the clinical and administrative capacity to properly discharge the functions of the role.

Annual Registration

On appointment, practitioners, must maintain live registration on the General Nurse Division of the Register of Nurses and Midwives maintained by Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland [NMBI] (Bord Altranais agus Cnaimhseachais na hEireann).

 

Practitioners must confirm annual registration with the NMBI to the HSE by way of the annual Patient Safety Assurance Certificate [PSAC].

 

Health

A candidate for and any person holding the office must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the office and be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.

 

Character

Each candidate for and any person holding the office must be of good character.

 

Age

The Public Service Superannuation (Age of Retirement) Act, 2018* set 70 years as the compulsory retirement age for public servants.

 

  * Public Servants not affected by this legislation:

Public servants recruited between 1 April 2004 and 31 December 2012 (new entrants) have no compulsory retirement age.

Public servants recruited since 1 January 2013 are members of the Single Pension Scheme and have a compulsory retirement age of 70.
